Can a Zappi Charger Use Solar Panels? What Your Property Needs

Solar charging depends on what your property is already doing
A solar PV system does not send every unit of generation to your car. Your home uses electricity first. Any available surplus can then be directed to a Zappi, provided the charger can measure what is being imported from or exported to the grid.
That makes the existing layout of your electrical system important. Two homes in Newcastle Under Lyme can have similar roof-mounted solar panels but need different Zappi configurations because of the way their consumer unit, inverter, battery and meter are arranged.
When we carry out a Zappi Installation, we look at the complete system rather than treating the charger as an isolated appliance.
The key question is where surplus power can be measured
A Zappi needs accurate information about the electricity flowing around the property. This is normally provided through a current transformer clamp, often called a CT clamp. It measures whether your home is exporting surplus generation or drawing power from the grid.
The clamp position matters. If it is installed in the wrong part of the electrical system, the charger may not understand what the property is using and what the solar array is producing. That can lead to charging from the grid when you expected solar charging, or to charging stopping and starting because the readings do not reflect the real flow of electricity.
The location of the consumer unit, the the cables between the meter and consumer unit, the solar inverter and any battery equipment all affect where measurement equipment should be fitted. This is one reason a photo survey can identify the likely arrangement, while an on-site inspection confirms the details before installation.
How the property changes the Zappi setup
A home with solar panels and no battery
This is usually the most straightforward arrangement. The home consumes generated electricity as normal, with available export directed towards the car when the Zappi is configured for solar diversion.
The important detail is that solar output changes constantly. The charger must respond to the balance between generation and household demand. If an oven, immersion heater or other substantial load is switched on, less surplus may be available for the vehicle. When that load is turned off, more power may become available again.
Solar charging is therefore not simply a matter of connecting the charger to the panels. The control settings need to reflect how the property is wired and how you use electricity inside it.
A home with a solar battery
A battery adds another priority to the system. Depending on its settings, it may store surplus generation before the car can use it. Some households want to preserve battery charging, while others want available solar directed to the vehicle when possible.
We need to understand the relationship between the battery, inverter and Zappi before deciding how the CT clamps should read the system. If the charger is configured without accounting for the battery, it may interpret stored energy or household demand incorrectly.
The right arrangement depends on the equipment already installed and the charging behaviour you want. It is not safe to assume that a setting suitable for a solar-only property will work properly on a battery-backed installation.
Properties with unusual layouts or older wiring
Older properties around Newcastle Under Lyme and Stoke on Trent can have electrical equipment spread across more than one location. The consumer unit may not be close to the preferred parking position, or the solar equipment may be installed in a garage, loft space or outbuilding.
Long cable routes, detached garages, external walls and limited access can all affect how the charger is connected and how the monitoring equipment is positioned. We also need to consider whether the existing electrical arrangement can support the additional load and whether protective equipment is suitable for the proposed installation.
Where a property has several electrical boards, the measurement point becomes particularly important. A clamp that monitors only part of the installation will not give the Zappi a complete picture of import and export.
What happens when there is not enough solar surplus?
Solar diversion does not mean the car can only charge when the panels are producing a large amount of electricity. The Zappi can be configured according to the charging mode and the way you want to use the vehicle. However, relying on solar alone may make charging slower or intermittent when household demand is high or generation is limited.
That trade-off should be discussed before installation. Some drivers prioritise using their own generation, while others need predictable charging before the car is next used. Your preferred balance affects the configuration and the practical value of the system.
What we check before final testing and setup
We check the position and condition of the relevant electrical equipment, identify how the PV system connects to the property and establish whether a battery or additional electrical board affects the readings. We then install and position the monitoring equipment appropriately, configure the Zappi and test its response against the property’s electrical flow.
Final testing should confirm more than whether the charger powers up. The system needs to behave correctly when the home is importing electricity, exporting surplus generation and using other significant electrical loads.
